“You know,” Youko remarks, taking a delicate sip of tea that’s far too hot to drink, “in Japan, most people wear pants to a tea party.”

“Youko!” Rakushun probably blushes under all the fur, but Youko only laughs, idly flicking the crumbs of her cookie at him. 

“It’s your own fault I make fun of you. You could just wear pants. Then the cooks wouldn’t make such a fuss about me having you in my rooms alone like this.”

“They only make a fuss because you never invite me in without waggling your eyebrows at them,” Rakushun scolds, looking far too concerned about propriety for someone currently dressed only in a jaunty neck scarf. 

“I have to give them something to think I’m being scandalous about,” Youko says, draining her cup and holding it out to be filled again, “or they start thinking of all the things I’m doing wrong that I don’t know about. Besides, I like seeing their faces when they realize how handsome you are.”

Rakushun buries his face in his teacup, somehow. “Your Majesty shouldn’t say such things. I thought you would have learned proper manners by now.”

But he still clinks her glass when she holds it up, promising gravely, “Never.”
